Is the end of an illustrious City career coming for a Manchester City stalwart?

As Stefan Ortega started his third consecutive Premier League game during City’s 2-all draw with Crystal Palace yesterday a thought crossed my mind. Are we witnessing the end of Ederson’s Manchester City career? The Brazilian keeper is arguably City’s greatest-ever goalkeeper. But perhaps the time is coming in the not-too-distant future that he will call time on his illustrious City career. Although Pep Guardiola has said that he remains City’s number one keeper you do feel that perhaps he is coming to the end of his time at the world champions, especially if he can’t regain his spot in the City starting lineup.

We very nearly saw Ederson leave Manchester City last summer. The Brazilian international was heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League for the majority of last summer. In an interview with TNT Sports Brasil Ederson explained that it was Pep Guardiola that convinced him to stay at the club for this season. Ederson had this to say about the situation that surrounded him last summer: “There really was a proposal on the table, something that weighed heavily because it was an unusual proposal… I had countless conversations with Guardiola, and one of them was essential. But from what he told me, the guarantees, the process and the evolution I had with him… All of that was essential for my staying at City.”

But that was last summer. This season Ederson had started the new campaign strongly. That was until he was dropped from City’s starting lineup after their 3-all draw with Feyenoord a few weeks ago. He has been on the bench for all of City’s past three Premier League games. Stefan Ortega has started ahead of the Brazilian international. Pep Guardiola is insistent on the fact that Ederson remains his number-one keeper. But if Ortega remains Guardiola’s choice of keeper the questions will soon start to swirl over Ederson’s future at Manchester City.

It appears that a rebuild of Manchester City’s squad is coming next summer. That is almost an inescapable fact now. A host of City’s heroes are likely to leave the club next summer. New faces will arrive, and favourite sons will depart. Depending on what happens with the City goalkeeping situation this season the focus may shift to Ederson’s situation. That’s a story to watch for for the remainder of this season.
