Cole Palmer breaks Premier League penalty record in Chelsea win

Cole Palmer has claimed another Premier League record after scoring twice in Chelsea’s 4-3 win at Tottenham.

Chelsea came from two goals down to win a thrilling London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. After Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski had fired Spurs into an early lead, following two errors from Marc Cucurella, Chelsea fought back with Palmer influential in the turnaround.

Jadon Sancho pulled one back with a lovely finish, before a brace of penalties from Palmer – either side of Enzo Fernandez’s strike – sealed three points for Chelsea. Heung-min Son’s late response was little consolation for Spurs.

Palmer’s pair of penalties mean he has now scored 12 in the Premier League for Chelsea, the most any player in the division’s history while retaining a 100% record.

He eclipses former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who scored all 11 of his spot-kicks duirng a decorated career with the Citizens.

Are Chelsea title contenders?

Chelsea sit second in the Premier League table and closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to four points, having played a game more. The Blues next visit Astana in the Europa Conference League before hosting Brentford in a West London derby at Stamford Bridge next weekend.

Enzo Maresca has insisted it is too soon for his inexperienced side to challenge for the title, but Chelsea sit above both Arsenal and Manchester City with 15 games played. There is growing confidence in West London.
