Reiss Nelson is set to return to Arsenal next summer, prompting speculation about his future as he edges closer to the midpoint of his season-long loan at Fulham.
Despite his impressive performances in west London, the loan deal struck between the two clubs does not include an option or obligation to buy, leaving Nelson’s long-term future uncertain.
The 24-year-old winger, who sustained a hamstring injury during Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Brighton, has been slowly finding his feet for Marco Silva’s side, but there is no indication his future lies at Craven Cottage. Arsenal’s long-term plans reportedly do not include the player, who will still have three years remaining on his current contract when he returns to the Emirates next summer.
Nelson’s latest injury adds to a string of fitness issues that have hindered his career. The incident occurred in the 71st minute of Thursday night’s match, forcing him to leave the pitch in visible distress.

While the full extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed, his reaction suggests a more severe hamstring problem, potentially worse than a grade 1 strain. Grade 1 injuries typically involve mild discomfort and minimal recovery time, whereas grades 2 and 3 signify partial or complete muscle tears, necessitating longer rehabilitation periods.
This injury compounds an already concerning record for the player, who has struggled with recurring problems. During his time at Arsenal, Nelson missed 108 days of the 2022/23 campaign due to thigh issues. While on loan at Feyenoord prior to his Fulham move, he also sat out 12 matches with similar setbacks. Over the years, he has battled a range of injuries, including head, knee, thigh, hamstring, ankle, and back problems, sidelining him for a combined total of 40 matches across multiple seasons.
Despite interest from clubs such as West Ham and Ipswich, Fulham won the race for Nelson’s signature last summer. However, his future at Craven Cottage beyond this season appears unlikely. The winger’s return to Arsenal will prompt discussions about his next steps, with a permanent move away from the Emirates on the horizon.
Nelson’s trajectory has been one of promise punctuated by setbacks, and his next move will be critical in determining whether he can fulfil his potential. For now, his focus will undoubtedly be on recovering from his latest injury and contributing to Fulham’s season once fit.
