Liverpool offer contracts to Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool have opened contract talks with star forward Mohamed Salah, and are looking to tie down Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold too.

Despite being top of the Premier League under Arne Slot, the future of the Liverpool trio has dominated headlines of late - particularly in the case of Salah. Following the Reds' recent win over Southampton, Salah spoke publicly of his disappointment that he had not been offered a new deal, a feeling he continued to express after Liverpool beat Manchester City and drew to Newcastle United.

However, it now looks as though Liverpool are willing to do a deal with their superstar forward, 32, who has been arguably the best player in the Premier League this term. The Athletic's David Ornstein reports Liverpool have made an opening contract offer to the Egyptian winger.

Additionally, the Athletic also report the Reds have offered new deals to Dutch captain and defensive colossus Van Dijk, 33, and vice captain and homegrown star Alexander-Arnold, 26. All three players are out of contract in the summer and will be able to sign pre-contract agreements with foreign sides come January 1, 2025.

It is expected that negotiations between the three and Liverpool will take time to resolve, a less than ideal situation for the Reds given how close it is until they can negotiate with clubs across Europe - or in Salah's case, the middle east in the form of the Saudi Pro League.

So far this term, Salah has scored 15 goals and registered 12 assists in all competitions for Slot's side, with Liverpool having won 18 of their opening 21 games this season.

His latest goalscoring performance saw him net a brace away at St James' Park against Newcastle United, a game which Liverpool drew 3-3. Had it not been for the crossbar denying him, he would have had a hat-trick too on Tyneside.

With Liverpool potentially set to embark on an historic season both domestically and in Europe - where they are perfect this term in the Champions League - it will be interesting to see if the offer of a new deal if enough to convince Alexander-Arnold to commit his long-term future to the Reds.

The Liverpool star is a target for Real Madrid, who signed Alexander-Arnold's close friend Jude Bellingham back in 2023. With Dani Carvajal out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season after rupturing his ACL, Carlo Ancelotti's side are on the lookout for a long-term replacement for the Spaniard.
