Arsenal handed triple injury setback amid losing more ground in Liverpool title race

Liverpool's Premier League title rival Arsenal has been dealt a triple injury setback. The Gunners, who have finished runners-up in the last two seasons, are now seen by many as Liverpool's closest competitors for the title this season, though Chelsea sits second.

Current champion Manchester City is struggling for form and is eight points behind Arne Slot's team, who also have an extra game to play. Chelsea, under the inexperienced leadership of head coach Enzo Maresca, beat Spurs 4-3. But Liverpool will be buoyed by the news that Arsenal dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Fulham on Sunday.

Arsenal thought it had snatched a late equalizer, but Gabriel Martinelli was ruled offside by VAR during the build-up. Mikel Arteta's squad has also been hit by injuries, with Gabriel and new signing Riccardo Calafiori missing from Sunday's match against Fulham.

Full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko was also absent due to injury. Arsenal's next Premier League match is at home against Everton on Saturday, December 14 (3pm).

Slot's team, on the other hand, will kick off at the same time at home against Fulham, following their Champions League match away at Girona on Tuesday. Liverpool will have had some rest after their Merseyside derby against Everton was called off due to bad weather.

The postponement was due to Storm Darragh. In these matches, Liverpool may also have the opportunity to welcome back several first-team regulars.

The upcoming fixture at Goodison Park on Saturday would have been too early for recovering goalkeeper Alisson Becker, as well as forwards Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa. However, all three are set to ramp up their fitness work, with a potential return to Spain on Tuesday night.

Liverpool.com says: Arsenal made plenty of noise about injuries earlier in the campaign but Liverpool has suffered too. Alisson and Jota have been out for a good while now and both are nailed-on starters in the first-choice XI when fit.
