Chris Paul and the San Antonio Spurs looked to get back on track on Sunday night after losing their previous three games of the 2024-25 NBA season.
In their 24th game, the Spurs hosted the injury-riddled New Orleans Pelicans, who were missing stars Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.
Coming into the match, Paul had recorded 12,089 career assists in his 20-year NBA career, good for third all-time behind NBA legend and current Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd (12,091).
At the 7:06 mark of the second quarter, the former Wake Forest Demon Deacons star hit center Victor Wembanyama for a 25-foot three-pointer, his third assist of the game.
In doing so, Paul passed Kidd for sole possession of second place on the all-time assists leaders list with 12,092.
The NBA congratulated the point guard for his latest feat with a post on X.
"Congrats to Chris Paul of the San Antonio Spurs for moving up to 2nd on the all-time ASSISTS list!" the NBA wrote on X.
NBA fans were impressed with Paul's newest accomplishment, leaving their thoughts on the matter on social media.
"Congratulations Chris," one fan wrote.
"Congrats Point God CP3," added another.
"Awesome moment for Chris Paul," chimed in a third. "All-time legend and a Suns great who deserves a spot in the Ring of Honor one day."
Others felt the need to remind people that Paul, despite being one of the best passers the league has ever seen, will likely never be able to overtake former Utah Jazz star John Stockton, who holds the impressive record of 15,806 assists.
"Stockton's record will NEVER be broken," one user said.
"John Stockton being nearly 4 thousand assists ahead of second place is crazy work!" added a second.
"That Stockton record looks untouchable forever," commented a third.
If Paul were to pass Stockton for the most assists ever, he would likely have to play at a high level for a few more seasons. The 39-year-old is nearly 4,000 assists shy of Stockton's remarkable number. However, the point guard has overtaken other legendary point guards, including Magic Johnson, Steve Nash and Oscar Robertson.
Following the Pelicans game, the Spurs will hit the road for a battle with the Portland Trailblazers on Friday before returning to San Antonio for a three-game homestand.
