MANCHESTER, England (CMC):
Jamaica and Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw delivered a dazzling performance by scoring twice, in her team’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Leicester, keeping the pressure on league leaders Chelsea in the Women’s Super League title chase.
Shaw wasted no time putting City ahead, heading in a pinpoint cross from Kerstin Casparij in the second minute after Yui Hasegawa’s clever pass set up the delivery.
The Jamaican international doubled her tally in the 29th minute with another powerful header, this time connecting with Leila Ouahabi’s perfectly placed ball into the box.
Battling cold and windy conditions at the Academy Stadium, City maintained their dominance after the break. Jess Park extended the lead in the 49th minute with a precise strike from the edge of the area, while Australian forward Mary Fowler capped off the scoring spree with a stunning close-range volley into the corner just nine minutes later.
The commanding 4-0 win was a timely response for Gareth Taylor’s side, bouncing back strongly from their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea before the international break.
City are five points behind reigning champions Chelsea who whipped Brighton yesterday.
