'Phenomenal': Paul Merson left amazed by Chelsea player during 4-3 victory at Tottenham

There were several fantastic performers in Chelsea’s 4-3 win away at Tottenham this weekend.

The Blues went 2-0 behind early into Sunday’s trip to Spurs in the Premier League, but they fought back in style to earn yet another three points this season.

It’s pretty clear that Enzo Maresca is coaching a really talented Chelsea squad this season. However, he’s surpassing all expectations because the side now sits second in the division table.

Chelsea legend John Terry mocked Spurs after Sunday’s dramatic seven-goal thriller. Next in the league, they face another London derby when they host Brentford.

Paul Merson praises Chelsea star Jadon Sancho

Paul Merson raved about Chelsea’s Jadon Sancho after his second goal of the season in the Spurs win.

Merson said on Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (5:25pm, 7 December): “Phenomenal goal. Again, don’t show him on his right foot, Sancho. What I like about it is he comes in with pace. He comes across that pitch. He’s come in 100mph. To finish like that, phenomenal finish by the lad.”

Sancho’s all-round performance yesterday certainly justified his place in the starting XI.

Maresca claims Chelsea attacker Sancho was “fantastic” against Spurs, showing his qualities both offensively and defensively.

Meanwhile, Chelsea supporters think Sancho is the club’s best winger after his display in the London derby.

Jadon Sancho hits purple patch

Sancho missed a few games earlier in the season due to a mixture of fitness and selection, but he’s really starting to hit some top form.

Here is a look at the English winger’s contributions in his last four Blues appearances:

Fixture Minutes played Goals Assists Match rating

Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea 90 1 0 8.4

Southampton 1-5 Chelsea 18 1 0 7.3

Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa 71 0 0 6.6

Heidenheim 0-2 Chelsea 89 0 1 8.2

The competition at Chelsea means each player faces a huge fight to stay in the starting line-up. Sancho’s starting to make a really compelling for himself to be a key figure on the left wing, though.

There’s signs in recent weeks that the 24-year-old forward is recapturing the form he showed in Germany as a Borussia Dortmund star.

If Mykhailo Mudryk wants to get back into Chelsea’s XI on the left, he may need to raise his level to catch Sancho.
