Marc Guehi drops hint as Newcastle United transfer target reveals personal ambitions

Marc Guehi is focused on 'doing the best he can' for Crystal Palace after the Eagles gave him 'so much'.

Guehi was, of course, subject of multiple bids from [Newcastle United](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/newcastle-united-fc) last summer but the Magpies ultimately stopped making offers for the [Crystal Palace](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/crystal-palace-fc) captain several weeks before the window shut. Although dialogue was kept open, Newcastle chiefs felt that Crystal Palace's demands went above what they were willing to pay.

Crystal Palace, as a result, lost out on the potential to bank a club-record fee last summer for a player whose value was at an all-time high following an impressive debut tournament at the Euros. Guehi is now approaching the final 18 months of his contract, ahead of the January window opening, but the England international is focused solely on helping his side avoid the drop.

"It's always doing the best that you can for the football club," the defender told Sky Sports after being asked about his personal ambitions. "The football club has given each and every one of us so much and it's just trying to win as many games as possible. Obviously, staying up at the moment is a big thing but if we can try and go beyond that, even better."

Sven Botman is hoping to return to action in the coming weeks, after returning to full training, but Newcastle look set to be in the market for an additional centre-back in 2025 as Fabian Schar and Dan Burn near their 33rd birthdays. Newcastle remain restricted by PSR rules, despite ending last summer in profit, and Eddie Howe admitted last week that 'nothing is absolutely fixed' - even if there is a desire from all levels of the club to strengthen the side.
