Chelsea star Marc Cucurella sent out an apology to the club's fans after his mistake against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, December 8. It came in the Blues' 4-3 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League.
Cucurella first slipped in the fifth minute, which led to Brennan Johnson dispossessing him and setting up Dominic Solanke to score for the hosts. The Spaniard slipped against in the 11th minute, leading to another goal, which was scored by Dejan Kulusevski. After the second goal, Cucurella went straight to the Chelsea dugout and changed his boots.
After the game, the Spaniard shared an image of his original boots in a trash can on his Instagram story. He apologised to the fans, writing in his caption:
"Sorry blues..."
It eventually didn't cost Chelsea as they bounced back brilliantly to win 4-3. Jadon Sancho scored in the 17th minute before Cole Palmer restored parity from the penalty spot in the 61st minute. Enzo Fernandez made it 3-2 in the 73rd minute before Palmer scored another penalty in the 84th minute.
Son Heung-min got another goal for Tottenham in the sixth minute of stoppage time but it was merely a consolation.
Enzo Maresca delighted with Chelsea's mental strength after Tottenham win
Chelsea have had an excellent start to the season under Enzo Maresca. They came into the London derby against Tottenham on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run, with five wins and two draws. They extended that run to eight games despite going 2-0 behind within 11 minutes.
After the game, manager Enzo Maresca was pleased with his side's resilience, and said (via Chelseafc.com):
"It’s an important win, firstly for the way it arrived, because to come in this stadium against this team and concede two goals, and then continue with the same plan on and off the ball, shows how the players are mentally strong.
"We are trying to work with the players on an off the pitch, but we’re also trying to work on mentality and togetherness. To come in this stadium and think you are going to win without suffering is impossible.
"For that, probably it’s the perfect win because two goals down, it was the worst picture for us, even if we were in control. We conceded two goals from Cucu, we created chances, we controlled the game, we kept the ball. At half-time we changed something tactically, and second half we deserved to win."
The Blues are second in the Premier League table, four points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand. They will next face Astana away in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday, December 12.
