AEK Athens boss makes his feelings clear on Anthony Martial after latest performance

Anthony Martial is fit again and letting his football do the talking over in Greece, after moving on from Manchester United.

Along with Federico Macheda and Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Martial is one of three former Manchester United first team players plying their trade in Greece.

Martial signed as a free agent for AEK Athens in September after being released by Manchester United in June.

The Frenchman had been linked with a move to Brazilian side Flamengo, before ultimately resuming his career in Greece.

Martial scores late winner

Anthony Martial took around a month to make his debut after signing for AEK Athens as he tried to get up to match fitness, having not played a single game in 2024.

Since then, he has not looked back. Martial has been on an impressive run of form, and after this past weekend, he has now scored three games in a row.

Martial netted a 87th minute winner for AEK Athens in their 2-1 win over OFI Crete. He has more than doubled his goal tally from last season.

The Frenchman has scored five goals for AEK Athens so far, plus one assist. He scored only two goals for Manchester United in 2023/24.

In 2022/23, Martial scored nine goals. The best output of his career was the 23 goals he scored in 2019/20 – but since then injuries played a big part in his struggle for form .

AEK Athens boss praises Martial

AEK Athens are delighted with the current output from the former Manchester United striker.

Manager Matias Almeida told Sport 24 that he is very happy with the way Martial is performing and connecting with his new teammates.

He explained: “Since the day Martial arrived, we have seen that he has joined the group and contributes to the team. He is an excellent teammate and shows great professionalism.”

“He is good for many reasons, I think the game system also helps him. But I never single out one or two players. We are a group and this group fights all together.”

One of the most astounding aspects of Anthony Martial’s performances for AEK Athens is that he has played 90 minutes in three of the last four games.

The last time Anthony Martial played 90 minutes for Manchester United was September 2021, and in a league game, January 2021.
