Liverpool have submitted an opening contract offer to tie down star forward Mohamed Salah to the club beyond this season. The future of the Egypt international has been clouded in uncertainty this season, and has been a major talking point in the league.
A few weeks ago, the former Chelsea man pointedly revealed that with his contract at Anfield due to expire in the summer, he had yet to receive an offer to stay at the club. He said he was more out than in, and after their win over Manchester City earlier this month, he declared that he expects that to be his last game for the Reds at the Etihad.
Mohamed Salah's comments drew the ire of fellow Reds legend Jamie Carragher, but The Athletic now reports that the forward has received an opening offer from the club. The report indicates that negotiations are far from done, as both parties need to agree on how long the forward will remain at Anfield.
Club legend Salah has been on the books of Liverpool since joining them from AS Roma back in 2017 after they missed out on signing him three years prior. The 32-year-old has been a sensational player for the Reds since joining them, scoring 226 goals and providing 101 assists in 370 appearances for the club.
Mohamed Salah's performances over the years have caused him to receive a great deal of interest from Europe and elsewhere, but he has always chosen to remain with the Reds. With 15 goals and 12 assists this season, the forward continues to be a key player for the Reds, proving that he deserves an extension.
Liverpool have now made opening contract offers to all three of their most senior players — Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Salah. The club ideally wish to keep the trio, but they can sign pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January 1.
Mohamed Salah out to join Sturridge in Liverpool history books
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is looking to join former striker Daniel Sturridge in the club's record books when he next takes to the pitch in the Premier League. The 32-year-old has found the net 13 times in 14 league appearances, with eight assists also to his name.
The former Chelsea man will look to become the first Red since Sturridge in the 2013-14 season to score in eight successive Premier League games when the Reds return to league action. They will face Fulham at Anfield on December 14, with their star forward missing out on a chance to make history in the Merseyside derby.
Liverpool were meant to face city rivals Everton in the league on Saturday but saw their fixture postponed due to Storm Darragh. The Reds will face Girona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday (December 10) before facing Fulham at the weekend.
