Five months after leaving Newcastle United for Manchester United, Dan Ashworth is out of work.
The saga that took him from St James’ Park to Old Trafford was infuriating, and now it was all for nothing.
It was announced on Sunday that Dan Ashworth has left Manchester United already, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe deciding to get rid of the bloke he spent so long trying to secure. It was earlier this year that Ratcliffe was moaning to the media about the Ashworth situation, with Newcastle refusing to just hand him to the Red Devils.
It was claimed that Newcastle wanted £20million for Ashworth in compensation. In contrast, Man United were willing to pay £3million for Ashworth.
While Newcastle United wanted the compensation they were entitled to, a move was eventually completed on July 1st as the Magpies scrambled to comply with PSR.
The Ashworth compensation helped Newcastle stay the right side of PSR, and it has now been revealed how much money Manchester United actually paid for the former FA chief.

Ashworth situation is laughable and infuriating for Newcastle
Given the way he left the club, there will rightly be plenty of Newcastle fans who are amused by Ashworth’s Man United departure.
However, it is also infuriating. His Toon exit turned into quite the saga, and Newcastle continue to feel the aftereffects of his move to Man United.
While his reputation has taken a battering as of late, Newcastle did have a high level sporting director in Ashworth, and someone they had worked so hard to bring in from Brighton.
As he left, Newcastle had to scramble to replace him. That resulted in Paul Mitchell arriving, and his relationship with Eddie Howe has made more headlines than the actual work he has done behind the scenes.
Mitchell has not had a harmonious start to life as Newcastle’s sporting director, with needless talk of tension behind the scenes before a ball had even been kicked this season.
And it is effectively all for nothing, as the reason it came about was Ashworth’s Toon exit.
Five months later and he has departed Manchester United, as everyone wonders just what was the point.
For Newcastle fans, they must continue to wait to discover whether they have landed on their feet by getting Mitchell to replace Ashworth.
