Andy Robertson has become a crucial part of Liverpool’s team. The Scottish defender signed with little fanfare in the summer of 2017 but went onto rack up record number of assists as the Reds won every trophy possible under Jurgen Klopp.
Robertson has faced some criticism this season under new manager Arne Slotbut would have likely featured in the Merseyside derby if it hadn't been postponed.
The 30 year-old's journey to becoming a Premier League winning left-back and Scottish captain is just as captivating as his abilities on the pitch. He was born in Glasgow and was a childhood Celtic fan.

His dad Brian was also a keen footballer in his childhood and growing up in the Marhill area was friends with the likes of Jim Duffy and Charlie Nicholas who would forge successful careers themselves.
Brian’s sporting ambitions however were cut short due to a spinal injury, which forced him to wear a metal brace stretching from his waist to his neck whenever he kicked a ball around with his childhood friends.
Robertson meanwhile joined the youth ranks at Celtic, but aged 15 was dropped from the academy due to being too small. Nevertheless, Robertson insisted being rejected from his boyhood club wasn’t the setback others thought.
In a 2018 interview, he said: “If you’re let go from Celtic, the club you support, and go to Queen’s Park, people think it’s a disaster. I don’t think I cried but I was very upset. As a young boy your dream has been taken away. But I had good people around me and it was probably the best thing that happened.”
Three years later, Robertson was playing for Queen’s Park in the lowest tier of Scottish professional football without a proper wage, forcing him to take on work outside of football. He said: “At Queen’s Park you just got your travel expenses so I found a job on the tills at Marks and Spencer on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow.”
An unearthed Robertson tweet from just before then in August 2012 said: “Life at this age is rubbish with no money. #needajob.” Robertson doesn’t think it is that big a deal, saying years later: “Life is like that for many young people.” Robertson kept at it, ending up on Merseyside after successful spells at Dundee United and Hull.
Robertson married his childhood sweetheart Rachel Roberts in 2022 after reports they had been dating for a decade. They tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Portugal, which was attended by Liverpool teammates past and present, including Adam Lallana, Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner.
Rachel, proficient in Spanish and Portuguese, graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2016 and owns her own sportswear brand Orosport. The pair have two children together.
