Liverpool came tantalizingly close to securing the signature of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window.
The Reds were prepared to activate the Spanish international’s €60 million (£50.1m) release clause, making him potentially Arne Slot’s first signing
However, the deal took an unexpected turn when Zubimendi made a late U-turn, choosing to remain with his boyhood club
The 25-year-old Euro 2024 winner was “torn because it would have meant leaving La Real in the lurch”
Zubimendi’s loyalty to Real Sociedad prevailed, and the club decided against pursuing alternative targets, with Zubimendi’s unique skillset seemingly the only option on the market for Arne Slot and co.
Consequently, Ryan Gravenberch stepped into the defensive midfield role, delivering performances that have since reduced the urgency for a new signing in that position.
Infact, the Dutchman’s resurgence this season has almost made him feel like a new midfield signing.
Since the summer, David Ornstein has reported that it is looking more and more likely that the 25-year-old will opt to depart the club—in January but much more likely at the end of the summer.
However, the player’s latest injury may stop any potential winter transfer.
Real Sociedad manager confirms Martin Zubimendi injury
Martin Zubimendi suffered a back injury during his team’s 3-0 victory against Leganes, forcing him to leave the field early in the second half.
The Spanish international showed visible signs of discomfort and immediately signaled to the bench for a substitution.
While medical tests are pending in the coming days, initial reports suggest an optimistic outlook regarding the injury’s severity
However, Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil admitted that the injury was ‘serious’:
“Zubimendi and Aihen have asked me to change them, and it seems serious,” he said via Mundo Deportivo.
“Sergio Gómez’s case is different, he suffered a blow to the quadriceps in a clash with a rival player, but I preferred to change him, we will see how he recovers.”
While a January move appears unlikely, there is growing expectation that Zubimendi will depart in summer 2025,
The midfielder’s release clause remains at €60 million, and he is under contract until 2027.
