BBC pundit Alan Shearer believes head coach Ruben Amorim will demand a massive overhaul of the playing squad following Manchester United’s 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
Previous manager Erik ten Hag had spent close to £600m on signings during his two years with the Red Devils but Shearer says Amorim will undoubtedly feel that he has been left with a very mediocre team:
“He must have walked into that football club and thought: ‘This is what you are giving me? You spent £600million with the previous manager and this is what I have to work with?’ He has got a huge job on his hands.”

Speaking after the loss to Forest, Amorim said he was under no illusions about the scale of the task ahead of him, stating that it will be “a long journey” to turn the club’s fortunes around.
Will Ashworth’s departure affect the club’s transfer plans?
United are seeking another sporting director after sacking Dan Ashworth on Sunday. Whether that decision will affect the club’s plans for the January transfer window, we shall have to wait and see.
Technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada had been looking after the club’s recruitment prior to Ashworth’s appointment so the responsibility for signings may fall back on them for now.
Are United expected to spend in January?
A lot may hinge on whether the club has any room for manoeuvre with regards to the Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules.
The Red Devils were once again among the highest spenders last summer so they may have to cut their cloth accordingly in the New Year. Of course, Amorim will want to reshape his squad as soon as possible but the majority of that work may have to wait until the end of the season.
