Leeds United belong in the Premier League and can make the step up to European football in the coming years, Pablo Hernandez has said.

In an interview with Leeds Live (9 December), the Whites legend was hopeful that Daniel Farke’s side can return to the top flight this season, having played a key part in doing that in 2020.

Hernandez’s role in Marcelo Bielsa’s title-winning team saw United return to the Premier League after 16 years, and the Spaniard wants to see Leeds in person at the top.

“I watch the games if I can – the right place for Leeds is the Premier League”, Hernandez said.

“I hope they come back and we can see the Leeds games again in the Premier League next year and why not watch Leeds in Europe in a few years?

“I think it’s a possibility. If that happens, for sure, I’ll come back to watch some games at Elland Road.”

Leeds United need to embody Pablo Hernandez in promotion race

Few players played a more integral role in United’s revival under Bielsa than Hernandez, whose displays saw him win the Player of the Year award for three seasons in a row in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

With 12 goals and assists in the 2018-19 season – which saw the Peacocks fall to recent opponents Derby County in the play-offs – and a further nine in 2019/20, Hernandez was the talismanic figure.

Leeds United Elland Road

Pablo Hernandez wants Elland Road to be hosting European football once again in the coming years.

No such individual – a veteran playmaker who ties the attack together – exists in Farke’s current iteration of the squad, particularly given the departures of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.

Beating Derby 2-0 at Elland Road for the first time since that dreaded play-off semi-final last time out leaves the Whites second in the Championship table, and well-placed to seal a Premier League return.

Hernandez’s part in the last promotion has since been immortalised in Leeds city centre, and if Farke’s team can repeat those heroics this season, there’ll be few happier than their legendary Spaniard.
