Liverpool had an unexpected weekend off from Premier League action with their Merseyside Derby clash with Everton postponed due to Storm Darragh.
Adverse weather conditions called off Saturday’s tie with the Toffees with Liverpool’s squad given some valuable time off in what is a crazy December schedule, with the Reds back in action on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League against Girona.
Despite not kicking a ball, Liverpool gained some ground in the Premier League title race, with Arsenal held to a 1-1 draw away to Fulham, though Chelsea secured another win in a dramatic 4-3 result away to Tottenham.
And Paul Merson has now named which of the two sides could be Liverpool’s biggest challengers for the Premier League title.

Chelsea tipped to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League
Speaking on Sky Sports coverage of Chelsea’s win against Tottenham, the former Arsenal star said Chelsea have the best chance of threatening Liverpool for the Premier League title, with the Blues now four points off their Anfield rivals.
Chelsea have been a surprise package this season under new manager Enzo Maresca, with the west London side, for the first time ever in the Clearlake era, looking like a competent football team with a clear plan and style of play that’s getting big results.

And for Merson, the Stamford Bridge side are now the side who could challenge Liverpool for the title, though there’s still a strong chance that Chelsea could fall well short of the Merseyside giants given their current position.
Merson said: “This was Chelsea’s biggest game of the season, going to Tottenham and winning, going second in the league, four points behind Liverpool. They’ve got a big squad, they’re in the title race. They might not go on and win it, but they’re in it at the moment and they’re Liverpool’s biggest threat.”

Arsenal could still be a huge threat for Liverpool this season
Had Gabriel Martinelli not been half a boot offside for Arsenal against Fulham, the conversation around which team can challenge Liverpool the furthest in this season’s Premier League title race could be looking a whole lot different.
The north London side have been underwhelming by all counts this season in the English top-flight, though as Liverpool saw first-hand earlier on this year at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal still have the quality to go head-to-head with the best teams in the Premier League and even get results.
And whilst Chelsea are the in-form team in England’s top flight, alongside Liverpool, Arsenal’s title credentials can’t be ruled out just yet, especially with players returning from injury this December.
