West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has had surgery on a lower limb fracture after being involved in a huge car accident on Saturday.
The Wandsworth-born player, who started his career at Tooting & Mitcham United before being handed his big breakthrough in the professional game at Reading, was airlifted to hospital after his Ferrari crashed in Epping.
“Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days,” said West Ham in a statement on their official website on Sunday.
“Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery.
“The club will provide further updates when appropriate.”
West Ham posted on Saturday that Antonio, 34, was in a “stable condition” following the accident.
Antonio has also played for Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest.
He signed for West Ham in 2015 and became their all-time record Premier League goalscorer in August 2021.
