Jamie Carragher has responded to suggestions that Chelsea could now be considered legitimate title contenders after the weekend’s action.
Thier thrilling 4-3 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has raised eyebrows about their title credentials, as the London club moved into second place, just four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool
The Blues demonstrated remarkable resilience, fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to score four unanswered goals, with Cole Palmer netting twice from the penalty spot.
Despite their impressive form, manager Enzo Maresca continues to temper expectations.
“The reality is we are not ready to be there, but the important thing is we improve day by day,” the Italian manager stated after the victory.
“My message to the players was to be focused day by day, in our session, the next game on Thursday and then Sunday. The main focus has to be to enjoy the day off and when we come back, 100%, train well, go for the game.”
The manager acknowledges that while supporters can get excited, the internal reality requires continued development before considering themselves genuine title contenders.
With nine league wins in 15 matches under Maresca’s guidance, Chelsea’s trajectory suggests promise, even as their manager keeps expectations in check.
Now Jamie Carragher has assessed where the Blues stand.
What did Jamie Carragher say about Chelsea?
Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool man revealed that he now considers Chelsea to be in a horse in the race after their comeback victory vs Tottenham Hotspur:
“They are definitely in it. You look at some of the attacking players, no team is perfect,” the former England defender began.
However, he also pointed out where Chelsea are weaker than other title competitors:
“I am talking about the goalkeeper who isn’t great. But there are probably areas in Liverpool’s team where you think they could improve there, the same with Arsenal and no doubt Manchester City right now.”
“But I just think certain positions almost feel more important than others when you think of teams who win the biggest prizes.”
“That’s what would probably make me say right now… I still look at the goalkeeper, even today, they were a couple of clearances that Tottenham could have gotten a goal from.”
Carragher also revealed that he thought Liverpool were ‘delighted’ to hear the final whistle at Anfield against the Blues despite the 2-1 win:
“Maybe you can go to Everton and you lose that 1-0 because of a situation with the goalkeeper. You think at the game at Anfield, Chelsea played Liverpool off the park and Liverpool were delighted to get the final whistle.”
“You look at that game and the goalkeeper let them down and I just think I look at Liverpool’s goalkeeper and even Arsenal’s goalkeeper, I think they are a level above Chelsea’s.”
