Liverpool got an extended break after their game at the weekend was rescheduled due to adverse weather and now their next outing will be in Spain where they face Girona in the Champions League.
The Reds are sitting comfortably at the top of the UCL table with maximum points from their first 5 matches so this midweek fixture won’t be of much importance for Arne Slot. However, Liverpool will want to continue their 17-match unbeaten run across all competitions.
Girona, on the other hand, are on a winless streak of four matches and their previous game was a 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the LaLiga. Girona will be playing at home but to be very practical, this match has a comfortable Liverpool win written all over it.
Liverpool’s team news and injury updates:
Alexis Mac Allister is going to sit this one out due to a suspension which means Curtis Jones will deputise in central midfield alongside Gravenberch while Szoboszlai operates in the No. 10.
Jones has been a regular feature in the Liverpool midfielder this season and even though most of his appearances have been in the attacking midfielder’s role, playing alongside Gravenberch should not be an issue for him.
Konate, Alisson and Conor Bradley continue to be absent which means Joe Gomez will hold onto this position.
Chiesa, Diogo Jota and Tsimikas are all close to becoming fully fit but we don’t think Arne Slot will use either of them in his starting lineup in midweek.
Mo Salah is set to sign a new contract with Liverpool and it’s hardly a surprise because the Egyptian international has made 21 goal contributions this season. Salah and Darwin Nunez have been a constant in the Liverpool frontline while Slot has used Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in tandem.
Both Diaz and Cody Gakpo have done really well out on the left-hand side and in midweek, we think the Liverpool manager will keep his faith in Luis Diaz.
Liverpool predicted lineup vs Girona:
Goalkeeper: Kelleher.
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Robertson.
Midfielders: Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Szoboszlai.
Attackers: Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah.
