Arne Slot’s side are hoping to keep up their sensational 100% record in the UEFA Champions League this season as they travel to Spain. We look ahead to the game with our Girona vs Liverpool prediction and preview.
Girona vs Liverpool: The Key Insights
Liverpool are predicted to make it six wins from six in the Champions League this season by the Opta supercomputer, winning 60.7% of pre-match simulations.
The Reds have won their last 10 group/league phase matches in the Champions League in a row.
Mohamed Salah has already had a hand in 27 goals in 21 club appearances this season (15 goals, 12 assists), more than any other Premier League player.
Liverpool head to Spain in the UEFA Champions League this week, hoping to keep up their 100% record in the competition in 2024-25. They are the only team with maximum points after the opening five matchdays of the league phase, and a win at Girona will all but secure qualification for the last 16 before the new year.
Arne Slot has already broken the record for the longest winning start by a manager of an English club in the competition, and despite this weekend’s Merseyside derby being postponed due to severe weather in the north-west of England, Liverpool still sit top of the Premier League table with a four-point cushion.
They face an out-of-sorts Girona side on Tuesday, with the La Liga club failing to win any of their last four competitive games (D1 L3), including a 3-0 defeat at home to Real Madrid on Saturday and a shock penalty-shootout exit in the Copa del Rey last week against fourth-tier side Logrones.
Their maiden Champions League campaign hasn’t gone to plan, either. They have just three points from their five games in the competition so far and look set to be one of the 12 clubs eliminated from the UCL in the league phase unless they turn their fortunes around soon.
They’d have to become the first team to defeat Liverpool in a group or league phase match in the competition since Napoli in September 2022, however, with the Reds winning each of their last 10 such games.
Slot will hope that Mohamed Salah can continue his excellent form in 2024-25, with the Egyptian scoring 12 goals in his last 15 appearances for the club. Overall, he’s had a hand in 27 goals in 21 club appearances this season (15 goals, 12 assists), which is more than any other Premier League player. Salah alone has scored half the number of goals that Girona have scored in 23 competitive games this season (30), with none of their players managing to reach five goals across all competitions.
Girona centre-forwards Bojan Miovski and Cristhian Stuani are still looking for their first goals in the Champions League this season, despite attempting 14 shots between them (7 each) and combining for 3.2 expected goals from those attempts.
Slot will be without defensive trio Kostas Tsimikas, Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konaté through injury on Tuesday night, while Alexis Mac Allister serves a one-match suspension. Alisson Becker is back in training after a thigh injury, though Caoimhín Kelleher is expected to continue in goal. The game may come too early for Diogo Jota, who also trained with the team on Monday. Federico Chiesa missed the session, reportedly through illness.
Girona vs Liverpool Head-to-Head
This will be the first meeting between Girona and Liverpool in European competition. Girona have never faced an English side before, while they will be the 13th different Spanish side who the Reds have faced in Europe.
Liverpool have won two of their last three UCL trips to Spain, beating Atlético Madrid in October 2021 and Villarreal in May 2022 (both 3-2 wins).
Premier League clubs are on a good run against La Liga sides in the Champions League, without a loss in seven UCL games against Spanish sides (D3 L4) since Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in April 2023. Indeed, that was also the last time a Spanish side managed to stop an English opponent from scoring.
Girona vs Liverpool Prediction
The Opta supercomputer predicts that there is a strong chance Liverpool will continue their winning run in the Champions League this season. They won 60.7% of the 10,000 pre-match simulations, while Girona won less than a fifth of them (18.0%).
The Reds are strong favourites to end up topping the league phase by the supercomputer coming into Matchday 6, as they finished in first place in 62.6% of the simulations. It’s not looking great for Girona, as they are currently eliminated in 95.5% of league phase sims by the supercomputer.
