Chris Paul #3 of the San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio Spurs point guard Chris Paul claimed his 12,092th career assist to move into second place ahead of Jason Kidd in the NBA all-time standings on Sunday night (8 December).
The 39-year-old veteran reached the milestone with his third assist of the night, passing the ball off to French phenom Victor Wembanyama, who duly converted with a 3-pointer with 7:06 remaining in the first half.
On an evening of double celebrations, the Spurs won the regular season match-up against the New Orleans Pelicans, 121-116.
With 12,099 assists, Paul is now only behind Utah Jazz legend and Hall of Famer John Stockton on the all-time list. Stockton is the NBA’s career leader, with 15,806 assists in over 19 seasons.
Currently in his 20th NBA season, and first with the Spurs, Paul has averaged 17.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 9.3 assists per game in his career and the two-time Olympic gold medallist may also yet have another NBA career landmark in his sights.
Paul is right now sitting third (2,648) in the NBA career steals list, again behind Stockton in first (3,265) and Kidd in second (2,684).
He is currently averaging 1.4 steals a game this season; provided the veteran says fit, he could feasibly move into second place for career steals to match his effort in assists.
