Jadon Sancho says he was made to feel at home by Chelsea ever since securing his deadline day loan from Manchester United, adding that he has “a lot of people to prove wrong”.
The winger - who ignited his club’s comeback in their 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday - has a £25million obligation-to-buy clause attached in his deal, which will be triggered next summer. Sancho has become a regular under Enzo Maresca, starting seven of his 10 matches.
His super strike against Spurs was his second goal in as many matches, having netted his first for the club against Southampton in midweek. Speaking after the win over Spurs, Sancho described the victory as “a great comeback”, insisting he did not fear the worst at 2-0 down.
“I have a lot of trust in this squad, so I wasn't too fazed,” he told Premier League Productions. “Once we got the first goal back I knew we would come back and get a result.”
Former Man United boss Erik ten Hag said that he and Sancho had put their feud behind them over the summer, after a fall-out over squad inclusion prompted last season's loan move to Borussia Dortmund amidst an exile from the first-team.
However, despite the truce, the attacker was still roundly tipped to leave and subsequently secured his deadline switch to Chelsea. Sancho added in the aforementioned interview: “From the very first day, they’ve made me feel welcome and I know I have a lot of people to prove wrong.
“I’m just working hard every day in training and once I get my opportunity I just try to show what I can do. Today, I’m happy that I scored and got the three points for the team.”
The 24-year-old said it was too early to start making any forecasts about Chelsea’s season, despite the Blues moving up into second place and within four points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand after Saturday’s Merseyside derby was postponed due to Storm Darragh.
Hinting towards the good morale within the squad, Sancho joked that Marc Cucurella would be getting stick in the dressing room, after he blamed his two slips that led to Tottenham’s two goals on his boots.
“Don’t worry, that’s definitely going to be part of the conversation in training!” Sancho laughed when asked about his teammate's change of footwear.
