Mason Greenwood's goal in Marseille's 2-0 win over St Etienne helped his side secure all three points to keep the pressure on Paris Saint-Germain, but also saw the forward match a personal milestone in the process.

The former Manchester United forward joined Roberto De Zerbi's French outfit during the summer transfer window, having spent the previous season out on loan in LaLiga with Getafe.

The French giants signed Greenwood for £30million from the Red Devils - a move that was not initially popular with all the club's fanbase, with livid supporters launching a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign when he was initially linked with Marseille.

The England international had not played for Man United since January 2022 and spent last season on loan at Getafe, scoring 10 goals and registering six assists on his way to being named the club's player of the season.

Greenwood was arrested that month and later charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in October 2022, but the charges and case were dropped in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew. Greenwood has denied any wrongdoing.

After seeming to begin the early stages of rebuilding his career with Getafe, Greenwood has continued his strong form with Marseille this term, notching his 10th in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

In doing so he became the first player since 1994 to score his first 10 French league goals in 14 games

Roberto De Zerbi's side remain in the title hunt and sit five points behind PSG on 29, level with Monaco

It marked the first time he had scored as many in a single league campaign since he struck 10 in 31 games back in 2019-20 for Man United.

It also took him to joint-second place in the Ligue 1 scoring charts alongside PSG's Bradley Barcola, with 10 in 14 games, with only Lille's in-demand forward netting more (11).

In doing so, he is the first player since Sonny Anderson to score his first 10 goals in French league football in only 14 games, the former Brazilian international doing so in 1994.

Greenwood's former club United meanwhile have been struggling for goals for most of the season, though the arrival of Ruben Amorim has seen something of a boost in that regard.

The club's top scorer this term is Alejandro Garnacho with eight in all competitions, while Marcus Rashford's four leads the way in terms of Premier League goals.

Against historic giants St Etienne, both summer signings Greenwood and Adrien Rabiot were on target to pick up three points that kept Marseille on PSG's tail in the title race.

Earlier this month Greenwood had converted a dramatic last-minute winner from the sport to beat Monaco 2-1.

De Zerbi's side are currently level with Monaco on 29 points, five behind modern-day powerhouses PSG.
