The Athletic have confirmed the reason why Federico Chiesa was absent from Liverpool’s pre-Girona training session.
Federico Chiesa’s £12.5 million summer move to Liverpool has been marred by fitness issues, with the Italian making just two appearances totaling 18 minutes in the Premier League, 60 minutes in the Carabao Cup, and a brief Champions League cameo
We exclusively reported that the Italy international has not been missing due to injury, but rather for Chiesa to fully adapt to life in England and the Premier League – especially since he did not have a pre-season with Juventus.
After the 27-year-old was not spotted in training on Monday morning, alarm bells started ringing over potential fresh injury worries.
However, the Athletic have confirmed that Federico Chiesa is instead merely ill, missing the final training session before the clash and likely the match as a result.
Taking to X, James Pearce reported:
“No Federico Chiesa in Liverpool FC training today due to illness.”
The Italian international has previously missed 100 games over six seasons, accumulating 493 days on the sidelines.
His most significant setback was an ACL injury in 2021/22 that caused him to miss 45 matches.
The club is taking a cautious approach with Chiesa’s return to full match-fitness, prioritizing his long-term availability over short-term gains. This strategy appears prudent given his previous injury history and Liverpool’s busy schedule ahead,
