Cole Palmer played a key role in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Tottenham on Sunday and the 22-year-old’s performance sparked an interesting conversation involving Jamie Carragher.
The England international scored a brace from the penalty spot and was also involved in Enzo Fernandez’s goal to help Enzo Maresca‘s team come back from 2-0 down to take all three points back to Stamford Bridge – despite being man-marked by Yves Bissouma.
The two goals made it 11 in the Premier League for the midfielder this season and having taken his Chelsea total to 36 across 62 matches, Carragher has made a big statement about the English talent.

Jamie Carragher heaps praise on Chelsea star Cole Palmer
In the aftermath of Chelsea’s win over Tottenham, Carragher admitted that he believes Cole Palmer has been the best player in the Premier League over the last 18 months given the performances he has produced in a Blues team that largely struggled during the 2023/24 campaign.
“I loved him last season, he’s started this season really well,” the former Liverpool star said on Sky Sports.
“I think I made a comment a few weeks ago that if you look at his almost 18 months at Chelsea, I don’t think there’s been a player in the Premier League who’s performed better than him over these 18 months – and he hasn’t been playing for the best team; I mean, they look like one of the best teams in the league right now.”
There is no doubt that Palmer has made a huge impact at Chelsea since his arrival from Man City last summer; however, this comment has not gone down well with Liverpool fans, who are making a case for Mohamed Salah related to the conversation.
Salah has become a legend at Liverpool over the last eight seasons since completing a £34.3m move from Roma back in 2017.
The Egyptian has been on fire again for the Reds this season and the two goals the 32-year-old bagged against Newcastle left Salah 15th on the list of the top Premier League goalscorers after turning 30.
After Carragher’s comments did the rounds on social media, some Liverpool fans were not happy that the former Red didn’t mention the winger and it left the Sky Sports pundit replying in anger to being misquoted by one fan account.
“Maybe you try harder at putting the full quote out! I said he’s been the best player over 18 months which he has in my eyes. And you probably know I said that but your desperation for likes & retweets knows no bounds!! Your account is so bad, please stop following me,” the 46-year-old replied to Anfield Edition.
Given the team he is in compared to Salah, Palmer’s performances have been very impressive and it is splitting hairs between the pair when discussing who the best has been over the last 18 months.

Carragher’s comment is not an outrageous one and it will be interesting to watch the duo try and fire their teams to the Premier League title this season.
