Liverpool handed huge fitness boost ahead of Girona clash

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was part of team training on Monday as he steps up his return from injury.

The Reds stopper has not played since October because of a hamstring injury, opening the door to understudy Caoimhin Kelleher, whose impressive form for the Premier League and Champions League leaders has sparked debates over who should start when both goalkeepers are fit.

For Arne Slot, that dilemma is creeping closer as Alisson was spotted training with the rest of Liverpool's goalkeeping unit ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Girona.

Slot promised Alisson would be ready "very soon" in the build-up to this weekend's fixture against Everton, which was postponed due to severe weather.

Alisson is not expected to be fit enough to feature against Girona but a return for the Brazilian is inching closer.

Slot has previously confessed Alisson will be his starting goalkeeper upon his return to fitness but has vowed to give the nod to Kelleher until the former is completely healthy, admitting Kelleher's recent form deserves better than being benched at the first opportunity.

"I have been clear about the decision a few times," Slot said recently when asked whether he would select Alisson over Kelleher. "[Kelleher] has done outstanding and that is why we should talk about now instead of what is going to happen in two weeks."
