Cole Palmer produced yet another inspired performance to help Chelsea come from 2-0 down and beat Tottenham 4-3 on Sunday. The 22-year-old scored twice for the Blues as they made it four successive Premier League victories to move to within four points of leaders Liverpool in the table.
However, Chelsea started slow at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Enzo Maresca's side found themselves two behind inside the first 11 minutes after two slips from Marc Cucurella allowed Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski to score and put the hosts in a dream position against their London rivals.
The Blues, as they have done several times this season, didn't dwell on going behind and halved the deficit in the 17th minute through Jadon Sancho's fine curled finish. In fact, Chelsea could and should have equalised before the break, with Nicolas Jackson and Palmer both squandering chances.
It wasn't meant to be, but Chelsea would eventually level just past the hour mark as Palmer stepped up from the penalty spot to equalise after Moises Caicedo was brought down. 12 minutes later, Chelsea went in front as Palmer's blocked shot fell to Enzo Fernandez and he volleyed home past Fraser Forster.
The 3,000 plus travelling Chelsea fans were overjoyed in the far corner and they witnessed their side score a fourth to wrap up the points. It was that man Palmer once again from the spot as he coolly dinked the ball down the middle, leaving Forster stranded after he dived sharply to his right-hand side.
Palmer's latest two-goal haul means he has a remarkable 38 goal contributions (25 goals, 13 assists) in the Premier League in 2024. That is the highest number from any Chelsea player during a single calendar year in the competition's history - a feat even Frank Lampard or Didier Drogba couldn't achieve.
With Chelsea facing four more Premier League matches against Brentford, Everton, Fulham and Ipswich, there is no reason why Palmer can't further add to that tally and go clear at the top of the record. It would be no surprise given his form this year and so far this season with the midfielder in fine fettle.
Only Mohamed Salah (21) has directly contributed to more goals than Palmer (17) in the top-flight this season, with the Chelsea star grabbing 11 goals and six assists in 15 matches. He is third in the Premier League scoring charts, with Salah and Haaland joint-top on 13 apiece.
