Real Madrid return to action in the UEFA Champions League tomorrow night for the first time since the defeat at Anfield.
Los Blancos are currently fighting for their survival in the event after losing to Lille, AC Milan and Liverpool so far and cannot afford to lose another game to keep optimism over qualification.
Facing Atalanta, the Serie A leaders, away from home is thus a game that is highly daunting, especially given the team’s recent run of form.
Papu Gomez previews the game
Speaking to the media ahead of the blockbuster UEFA Champions League clash tomorrow, Atalanta legend Papu Gomez insisted that the Italian side had what it takes to defeat Real Madrid in the match.
“Atalanta can hurt anyone, not just Real Madrid. The whites are not at their best, they have players injured or who have just recovered. I don’t see them very solid.”
“In Spain, you never train to play man against man all over the field,” he added on the difference in approach.

Speaking on what the Italian side must focus on against Los Blancos, he said,
“It will be essential to remove space with the defenders and be ready to counter the long passes from deep. If Mbappé and Vinicius leave with 40 meters ahead, they hurt you, as Leao hurt on Friday.”
“It will be important to watch the August game again, the coach will prepare tomorrow’s game starting from there,” he added, referring to the UEFA Super Cup clash.
Papu Gomez then praised Atalanta for their showing so far this season and spoke on the Serie A standings where they are on top.
“Atalanta may be among the top three in Serie A, Inter has something more, but there is no team against which they should think: today we lose for sure.”
Finally, he spoke on what the team’s greatest strength was, saying,
“The defence is much stronger than in the past. It’s impressive, top-level. A mixture of experience, quality, strength and character.”
