Report: Man United leading Premier League clubs in race to sign prolific striker in January

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to make a January swoop for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

The 25-year-old is currently on loan from the Serie A side at Galatasaray, who were the thankful beneficiaries of a complicated summer window for the attacker.

Osimhen was heavily linked with a permanent move away from Napoli, however the Nigeria international failed to arrange such a deal, instead transferring to the Turkish giants before the close of their summer window.

Since making the shock switch to the Turkish Super Lig, the Serie A winner has scored seven goals and provided three assists across nine league appearances.

A star under the likes of Luciano Spalletti in Naples over recent years, Osimhen has netted 76 goals across 133 matches for Napoli since his move from Lille in September 2020.

Man United 'preparing January bid' for Napoli man Osimhen

According to II Matino via Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are in the race for the services of Napoli star Osimhen in the near future.

The report claims that the Red Devils are preparing a swoop for the Nigerian ahead of the January transfer window, with Ruben Amorim targeting reinforcements for his forward line.

It is understood that Man United will face serious competition for the signature of Osimhen, with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain also said to be keen on the player.

Currently plying his trade at Galatasaray, the 25-year-old supposedly has a clause in his contract which would make an exit from the Turkish Super Lig easier.

It is believed that Osimhen would be able to terminate his loan deal with Cimbom should any of 10 unnamed clubs submit a bid for the striker in the New Year.

Do Man United need Osimhen?

Despite the 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, there were positives for Man United in the form of Rasmus Hojlund, who bagged his second league goal of the campaign.

The towering Dane and summer arrival Joshua Zirkzee are currently battling it out for the spot at the tip of Amorim's infamous 3-4-3 system.

There is an argument that neither Hojlund or Zirkzee are at the level that Man United need to seriously compete for the title, but the fact is that the rest of the squad are a considerable distance away from such aims also.

It is highly unlikely that a January swoop for Osimhen would solve all of the Red Devils' problems, as they try to escape from mediocrity in the Premier League table.
