United ready to spend€40m on ex-Chelsea player who has become superstar at another PL club - report

Manchester United are prepared to make a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, as per Fichajes.

United focused heavily on strengthening their backline during the summer. The transfer window, spearheaded by Dan Ashworth, saw the club sign two new central defenders.

The Red Devils initially prioritised signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton. However, after failing to lower the Merseyside outfit’s demands, the Mancunians secured the services of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

Interestingly, the Peoples Person recently relayed a report claiming De Ligt wasn’t the Ashworth driven signing and the move for him was instead led by Erik ten Hag.

Amid the suggestions of an incoherent transfer strategy at Old Trafford, it is being suggested the Premier League giants are once again looking to sign a new defender.

According to Fichajes, United are preparing to sign Guehi, who has brilliantly led Palace’s backline in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old’s positional awareness, calmness in transition situations and ability to keep his side’s defence compact has sparked interest of several clubs and has even made him an England regular.

The Spanish outlet claims the former Chelsea star has landed on United’s radar “as a possible reinforcement in the next transfer market.” It is added that the club’s hierarchy see the Palace star as an “ideal solution” to strengthen their defence.

It is understood United would be willing to offer €40 million to sign the England international, who is tied to Palace until 2026.

It remains unclear what the figures at Selhurst Park are going to demand for their star defender when United knock on their doors. The South London side proved tough negotiators over the summer when Newcastle United tried to secure Guehi’s signature.

United’s backline has looked resilient under Ruben Amorim and their summer signing De Ligt has done well in recent weeks. Yoro, meanwhile, has appeared promising in his first two games for the club.

As such, it is best to wait for the season to progress before setting sights on another defender.
