Analysis: Thiago shows what he can offer to already-potent Brentford attack

Brentford claimed the last Premier League scalp that had eluded them with a thrilling 4-2 win over Newcastle United at Gtech Community Stadium at the weekend, meaning they have now beaten all 25 teams they have faced in the division - and it was apt, in many ways, that it was the Magpies.

Famed for their free-scoring football under Kevin Keegan, Newcastle's memorable team in the 1990s was famed for its, 'If you score three, we'll score four' mentality - and Brentford have clearly taken a page from the Geordie's playbook this season!

Currently only behind west London rivals Chelsea (35 goals) in the Premier League goal charts, the Bees (31 goals) maintained their unbeaten home record in the top flight with another explosive display at Gtech Community Stadium.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, Nathan Collins and Kevin Schade secured three points, rendering goals from Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes as mere consolations for the visitors.

Brentford have now struck 26 goals at home this season - four goals more than any team in Europe's top five leagues - and the Bees' prolific start to the 2024/25 campaign has well and truly dispelled any doubts that Thomas Frank's side would lose their cutting edge without the departed Ivan Toney in their ranks.

In fact, with Igor Thiago making his first Premier League start against Newcastle and Schade netting his fourth goal in three games, the signs are that Brentford now possess more firepower in their ranks than at any point in their Premier League adventure to date.

The Bees avenged their loss to the same opposition by the same scoreline back in May, and the game marked the first time that Mbeumo, Wissa and Thiago had started a competitive game together for Brentford.

With a combined 86 goal involvements between them in club competition over the past two seasons, the trio has real potential.

Thiago spearheaded the Bees' attack to good effect against the Magpies to delight his new manager: "Igor, what a presence. What a work rate. So strong in the duels," said Frank. "He found a good position in the box, also in the link-up play. He will get even better when he knows more how we play."

In total, Thiago took 32 touches, won three aerials and played one key pass, and the Brazilian looks like he will provide a potent threat from both open-play and dead-ball situations.

Last season in the Jupiler Pro League, Thiago scored 50 per cent of his goals from open play, with 44 per cent of his strikes coming from inside the six-yard box.

This season in the Premier League, Brentford (24) have scored more goals from open play than any team in the top flight, excluding counter-attack goals, and the Bees remain one of the most efficient teams in the division when it comes to creating high-quality chances at close quarters; only Bournemouth, Spurs and Arsenal have been more prolific from inside the six-yard box.

Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken - who underlined his credentials as one of the best distributors in the league, with his first assist of the current campaign against Newcastle - leads the league for accurate long balls this season (151 completed), and his relationship with Thiago will no doubt grow over the coming weeks.

The games come thick and fast at this time of year and Brentford fans will hope Thiago's addition to an already formidable attacking line-up ensures the goals continue to flow.
