Pompey striker Mark O’Mahony has been ruled out for the remainder of the calendar year.

Blues boss John Mousinho has confirmed the on-loan Brighton forward will miss the next 4-5 weeks through injury.

It was initially thought the 19-year-old had suffered a hip injury after coming on as a 55th-minute substitute in the recent draw against Swansea before being replaced just 13 minutes later.

However, scan results have shown the frontman has strained one of his oblique muscles (side strain). The Irishman is now back at the Amex Stadium receiving treatment on the injury. He’ll return to Fratton Park once given the go-ahead from the Seagulls’ medical team.

Confirming the news ahead of Tuesday night’s Championship visit of Norwich to Fratton Park, Mousinho said: ‘So Mark’s going to be out for 4-5 weeks. He’s picked up a strain in one of his oblique muscles, which is a pretty rare injury for a footballer.

‘He picked it up against Swansea, obviously, when he came on. He’s been back at Brighton, he’s had a scan and continues to do his rehab back at Brighton. We’re in constant communication with them and as soon as he’s back and he’s available to train he’ll be back.’

O’Mahony has featured nine times for Pompey following his summer loan move from the Seagulls, scoring two goals.

The timing of his injury will represent a setback for the Blues. They are already without Kusini Yengi until February, after he picked up a knee injury while on international duty with Australia last month.

Mousinho added: ‘Yeah, (it’s a blow), particularly the nature of it. We’ve watched it (the incident against Swansea) back one hundred times, and we can’t pick up anything that was too obvious.

‘So, yeah, a bit of a blow, but it’s not too bad and hopefully we’ll have him back in the new year.’

With both O’Mahony and Yengi currently out, Pompey’s obvious options for the central striking role moving forward are Colby Bishop, Christian Saydee and Elia Sorensen.

Mousinho has already ruled out adding to his forward department in the January transfer window.
