Joe Cole claims summer transfer window 'set Manchester United back a year'

Manchester United's new era suffered another setback on Saturday as Ruben Amorim suffered his first home loss as boss in the 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The defeat echoed the defensive lapses seen during Erik ten Hag's rein and gave the new boss a real insight into the job at hand at Old Trafford.

One of his issues is the personnel of the squad, according to former Chelsea star Joe Cole.

Speaking to Paddy Power, the Premier League winner says INEOS’ first summer transfer window wasn't up to scratch, and now they may need to go down a different route to recruit.

“I wouldn’t say this season is a write-off for Manchester United, they could still build some momentum, but they are absolutely going through a rebuild. There are so many players in that Manchester United team that I don’t think can take them where they want to go.

“I praised the Manchester United staff, who have all come in with stellar reputations, but their first transfer window was terrible – it probably set United back by a year. They can’t miss in the next transfer windows; they need to get players that can play for this United squad.

“They won’t get the top players – they won’t want to go to Manchester United. They need to go underneath that and find the best young players with characters you can develop and become top class. Manchester United are not eating at the top table – that's just a fact.”

The Red Devils are back in action on Thursday as they travel to play Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League before the Manchester derby on Sunday.
