Manchester City may be struggling at the moment, but it has still been a pretty good 2023/24.
Back in May, Manchester City sealed their fifth straight Premier League title, pipping Arsenal on the final day, with a win over West Ham United.
City sadly fell at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League to eventual winners Real Madrid, but lost via a penalty shoot-out which is so often the flip of a coin.
And there was defeat for City in the FA Cup final against Manchester United.
But winning the league, going out on penalties in the quarters in the Champions League and being runners-up in the FA Cup wasn’t too bad, especially with City also winning the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup in 2023/24.
Today, the FIFPRO World XI has been released, and it makes for rather interesting reading.

Today, the FIFPRO World 11 has been named – and City have four representatives.
They are Ederson, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.
Rodri recently won the Ballon d’Or to many fans’ delight and was pretty much guaranteed to be voted in, and there was also another strong season from Haaland.
Ederson’s inclusion has had some people talking though, as has De Bruyne’s given his fitness issues.
De Bruyne, of course, only played half of City’s 2023/24 campaign after he sustained a serious hamstring injury in the first game of the season against Burnley. This, after De Bruyne admitted his hamstring ‘snapped’ in the Champions League final only a couple of months prior.
Perhaps the big news here is that Phil Foden did not make it into the XI – which was voted for by 21,266 players.
Foden, of course, won the Premier League Player of the Season award and FWA Player of the year award, as well as City’s own Player of the Season award.
Another player who narrowly missed out for City was Ruben Dias, who was 2113 votes behind Real Madrid and Germany defender Antonio Rudiger.
A shame for Foden after the season of his life
We know that Foden isn’t playing too well at the moment, but players vote for their FIFPRO World 11 picks based on player performances from 21 August 2023 to 14 July 2024
During this period, Foden was absolutely superb for City and was in the form of his life for most of the 2023/24 campaign.
Phil Foden for Man City in 2023/24
Appearances – 53
Goals – 27
Assists – 12
Trophies won – 3
He missed out on a place in midfield to his fellow City teammates Rodri and De Bruyne, and his England teammate Jude Bellingham, and Real Madrid’s now-retired midfielder Toni Kroos.
It’s obviously unclear why Foden came up short and players will likely all have different reasons for overlooking him. But perhaps he simply doesn’t have the same weight of reputation as someone of the others.
