Liverpool’s youth development continues to produce promising talents, with Ben Doak and Owen Beck garnering significant attention this season. Speaking on the Anfield Index Podcast, journalist David Lynch offered insights into their progress, potential futures, and the challenges of breaking into Liverpool’s first team under Arne Slot.
Ben Doak: A Talent With Potential, but Not Yet Ready
Ben Doak, an exciting young forward, has shown promise with his performances in the academy and brief first-team appearances. However, Lynch expressed a cautious view on his prospects of becoming a regular contributor to Liverpool’s senior squad in the near future. He stated:
“I struggle to see him breaking into the first-team picture next season unless something extraordinary happens.”
Lynch highlighted the steep competition in Liverpool’s attacking lineup, where even sixth-choice options are often seasoned internationals. While Doak’s potential is undeniable, Lynch stressed the importance of regular playing time to his development. Without meaningful minutes at Liverpool, a loan move or eventual sale could be on the horizon.
Owen Beck: A Pathway to the First Team
In contrast to Doak, Owen Beck may find a clearer pathway to Liverpool’s senior squad. Lynch noted that Beck’s position as a left-back aligns with a potential area of need for the club in the coming seasons. He explained:
“Left-back is a position where Liverpool may need reinforcements. Beck’s doing really well at Blackburn, and if he keeps this up, he could have a shot.”

Lynch compared Beck’s trajectory to that of Conor Bradley, who made a strong case for inclusion after excelling on loan.
“Conor Bradley tore it up in League One and returned ready to step into the squad. If Beck can do the same, there’s no reason why he couldn’t be considered for the first team,” Lynch said.
Challenges and Opportunities for Liverpool’s Youth
The contrasting paths of Doak and Beck underscore the challenges faced by young players at elite clubs like Liverpool. Lynch explained:
“You’ve got to be almost a prodigy to break into Liverpool’s first team. The standards are incredibly high.”
For Doak, this means proving he can make an impact at the highest level, possibly through loan moves or even a transfer if opportunities at Anfield remain limited. Meanwhile, Beck’s development in a position where Liverpool may lack depth could open doors for him in the near future.

Futures of Doak and Beck
David Lynch’s comments highlight the contrasting fortunes of Liverpool’s rising stars. While Ben Doak may face an uphill battle to secure his place at Anfield, Owen Beck’s progress could see him emerge as a viable option for the first team. As Lynch summarised:
“It’s not just about talent; it’s about timing and the needs of the squad. Both players have the ability, but their pathways couldn’t be more different.”
