'I’ve spoken to Liverpool': Manager says he's now asked the Reds to extend 'excellent' player's loan spell

Liverpool have sent a number of their young players out on loan this season, and development across the board seems to be promising.

Ben Doak won praise last week after his latest performance at Middlesbrough whilst Giorgi Mamardashvili impressed Liverpool fans last month after an outstanding performance out on loan with Valencia.

With Liverpool optimising the loan system expertly, the Reds can expect a number of top prospects to return to Anfield next summer more prepared for Premier League football and ready to impress Arne Slot in training.

And one talent could be set for an extended loan spell having impressed at his club this season.

Morecambe manager says he wants Rhys Williams to stay for the season

Speaking to the Lancaster Guardian, Morecambe manager Derek Adams revealed that he has spoken to Liverpool about keeping hold of Rhys Williams for the remainder of the season, with the defender set to return to Merseyside in January.

Morecambe won the race to sign Williams in the summer with the 23-year-old centre-back becoming a regular for the League Two side, and even though the Lancashire side currently sit 23rd in the standings, Adams has been impressed with what he’s seen from the Liverpool loanee.

Adams said: “I’ve spoken to Liverpool and we’ve asked for his loan to be extended. He’s been excellent for us and it’s given him an opportunity to play week in week out, which he needs and wants. He’s improving with every game and that’s the beauty of a loan, he gets an opportunity to go elsewhere and play.

“He’s come in here and been able to get 90 minutes every week so, hopefully, we can have him until the end of the season. Then, when he does go back at the end of the season, he’ll do so as someone who’s played 40-odd games and got regular football under his belt.”

What else has been said about Liverpool’s Rhys Williams?

It feels like an eternity since Williams was considered one of Liverpool’s most exciting prospects having been thrown into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI alongside Nat Phillips following a centre-back crisis at the Reds.

Yet even with Klopp lauding Williams as ‘exceptional, the 23-year-old defender has failed to hit the heights many expected from the former England youth international, though this season has seen a notable change in the youngster’s performances.

Barry Lewtas lauded Williams before his loan move to Morecambe, and the defender is showing in League Two that he does have a future in the English game, with survival key for the Globe Arena side this season.
