Newcastle United had major defensive problems away to Brentford on Saturday.
Conceding goals has become a problem for Eddie Howe’s side. In Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool, two of the goals they conceded came from giving the ball away cheaply.
That was a recurring theme on Saturday, as Newcastle lost 4-2 to Brentford.
Alan Shearer criticised Fabian Schar’s defending, as Newcastle conceded four goals that were all utterly avoidable. Newcastle’s defensive efforts were shocking, at a time when Eddie Howe is desperate for consistency.
On the topic of consistency, Howe has had a settled back four as of late. However, that is perhaps something that should change in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat.

While Howe named the same back four against Brentford that started the Liverpool game, he was able to welcome Kieran Trippier back into the matchday squad.
The £12million defender missed the draw with Liverpool through illness, but was able to return at the weekend. He came on in the 83rd minute, but was unable to inspire a Toon comeback.
However, Trippier is a player who Howe should consider starting when Newcastle face Leicester City on Saturday.

The Magpies could benefit from his leadership at the back. Howe’s side looked rudderless in defence against Brentford, as they slumped to a really worrying defeat.
Given his experience, Trippier is well positioned to help change Newcastle’s fortunes. He adds calmness and quality on the ball, while there is also the added bonus of his delivery from set pieces.
Up until his recent hamstring injury, Trippier was back in the Newcastle starting XI. Now he is available again, and a recall from Howe suddenly feels inevitable given what is currently going on at the back.
Who Trippier could replace in Newcastle’s starting XI
If Howe does decide to start Trippier, he will have to drop one of Tino Livramento or Lewis Hall to the bench.
While the obvious choice would be to swap Trippier with Livramento, the alternative option is to drop Hall and move Tino from right to left. That is what happened on Saturday afternoon when Trippier was introduced.
Ahead of the Leicester game, I do not think there is a standout candidate to drop to the bench in favour of Trippier. Howe could drop either Livramento or Hall and I do not think there would be too many complaints.
Regardless, the Toon boss does need to use this chance to freshen things up and bring Trippier back into the side. His experience and leadership can be pivotal during this tough period.
