Wolves player ratings vs West Ham: Lemina struggles & multiple 5/10s as Gary O'Neil loses 'El…

Wolves have lost to West Ham United, leaving Gary O’Neil on the brink of the sack.

After losing in shocking fashion to both Bournemouth and Everton, only a win would have done tonight for Gary O’Neil – even then, three points might not have been enough.

It now looks as though it is a question of when O’Neil is sacked by Wolves, not if.

Speculation has been rife about his future since the Everton game, and there is surely no way he can survive this latest defeat.

Wolves went 1-0 down in the second-half after yet more shocking defending saw West Ham score from a corner. Tomas Soucek pulled away from the crowd and looped in a header.

After West Ham saw a goal ruled out by VAR for offside, Wolves then scored an equaliser through Matt Doherty after a fine ball in from Rayan Ait-Nouri.

But just moments later, Wolves conceded. Jarrod Bowen picked the ball up on the edge of the box, jinked past Goncalo Guedes and finished into the far corner.

Here’s how we rate the Wolves players from tonight’s game.

Sam Johnstone – 5/10

In for Jose Sa, who dropped out of the matchday squad altogether due to a shoulder injury, although Gary O’Neil said before the game he would have picked Johnstone to start anyway. Got away with one parry in the first-half that almost found a West Ham man for an easy tap-in. Caught in no man’s land for the goal, although his defenders were more at fault. But was actually involved in Wolves’ equaliser, sweeping the ball out to Goncalo Guedes.

Matt Doherty – 6/10

A surprise to see him starting after the defeat to Everton, but the formation change saw him get the nod as a right wing-back. Doherty provided a good outlet for Wolves at times and supplied one excellent cross in the first-half which Joao Gomes might have done better with. Took his goal well, but struggled against the lively Crysencio Summerville though. Booked.

Nelson Semedo – 5/10

Back into the team after missing the Everton defeat through suspension. With Craig Dawson dropping out of the side, Semedo operated as a right centre-back and wasn’t great in between Doherty and Santiago Bueno.

Santiago Bueno – 5/10

Bueno was a little shaky and was pulled out of position at times as the middle centre-back. His lack of pace and mobility is worrying.

Toti Gomes – 5/10

An OK showing from Toti who won his fair share of headers and also made several important blocks in the game. Looks more at home operating in a back three.

Rayan Ait-Nouri – 5/10

Used at left wing-back and didn’t offer too much threat going forward. Messed up what should have been a simple cross to an unmarked Doherty at the start of the second-half. But he atoned for that later on in the half as he supplied a great cross for his fellow wing-back Doherty to score. Might have done more to prevent West Ham’s second goal with his defending against Mohammed Kudus.

Mario Lemina – 4/10

May have been relieved to be back starting in midfield after playing the first half on the right of a back three against Everton. But this was a poor showing from the Wolves captain, and often couldn’t get near the West Ham midfielders. He was all over the place positionally. Seems shattered, and looks to have the weight of the world on his shoulders right now. Lost his head after the full-time and was involved in an altercation with Bowen.

Andre – 5/10

Not an impactful performance from the Brazilian as the deepest-lying midfielder. Hooked after 60 minutes.

Joao Gomes – 5/10

Gomes was combative for Wolves as usual. But should have done better with the first-half chance he had from Doherty’s brilliant cross. Booked, and will now miss the next game against Ipswich Town.

Matheus Cunha – 5/10

Wolves’ star man was again well marshalled by the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Konstantinos Mavropanos. He struggled to break the Hammers down. When he’s ineffective, there’s little hope in games for Wolves.

Jorgen Strand Larsen – 5/10

Strand Larsen continues to prove himself as a workhorse for Wolves. His link-up play is really good and it’s clear to see why he’s becoming a popular player at Molineux. But he was starved of service at the London Stadium, and hooked after 60 minutes.

Substitutes

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde – 5/10

Had a potential chance taken off him by Guedes who attempted an overhead kick. Didn’t do a great deal.

Goncalo Guedes – 5/10

Involved in the Wolves equaliser, but should have done better defending against Bowen for the second West Ham goal.

Tommy Doyle – N/A

Not much time to make an impact and must be wondering what he has to do to get a start. Did have one chance towards the end but showed horrible composure and blazed his effort over.

Rodrigo Gomes – N/A

Hardly any time for the youngster to do anything.
