Liverpool's Champions League form marks them heavy favorites against Girona

It's no secret now that Liverpool are the lone unbeaten team in the newly revamped Champions League format as they have been brilliant from the beginning this season. Hugely impressive wins over clubs like AC Milan Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid among others is a reflection of their top levels.

So dominant they have been in this competition that they have already secured a Top 24 spot in the "League Phase"; which is a playoff spot at worst.

However, having positioned themselves so very well, a win over Girona on Tuesday coupled with some other results, could see the Reds punch their ticket directly to the Round of 16.

Liverpool have not conceded a goal in their last three champions league fixtures, the wins over RB Leipzig, Leverkusen and Real Madrid.

Virgil van Dijk has been in stellar form in the continental competition to this point and he will be well rested following the postponement of the [Merseyside Derby](https://rushthekop.com/a-look-back-at-the-last-five-meetings-between-liverpool-and-everton-01jedxvbe6at) this past weekend.

The way Arne Slot wants his side to play is well suited to the European game as it encourages the Reds to keep the ball a lot more than previous years and they can unleash a wide variety of attacking threats at almost any moment.

It's true they reached 3 Champions League Finals (Winning one) under the gegenpressing system laid out by Jurgen Klopp, but this new measured approach allows them to absorb pressure a lot better and minimize dangerous threats from the opposition.

The squad should still have sky-high confidence at this point and they will expect to get the job done on Tuesday and potentially book a last 16 spot.

One of the surprise outfits from last season, Girona are struggling this term to match the heights they found themselves touching last term.

Perhaps it's the addition of Champions League football, their squad being raided and the weight of expectation, but they are showing inconsistencies we didn't see in 2023/24.

Their last three matches have been a draw in the league with Villareal, being ousted from the Copa del Rey and getting hammered 3-0 by Real Madrid at the weekend, not exactly confidence boosting stuff.

They currently sit 9th in the La Liga table and have not truly looked like a dangerous team that could challenge for Top 4 once again.

They will be huge underdogs against the [Reds](https://rushthekop.com/newcastle-wobble-a-reminder-that-liverpool-must-retain-concentration-despite-strong-lead-at-the-summit-01jebw8bfe9v) despite being the home side. Their Champions League form has been even worse, as they have only mustered a paltry 1-0-4 record to date.

This all points to Liverpool rolling on once again, but in European football, nothing is guaranteed, but this might be as close as it gets.
