Arsenal transfer news: Gunners set to battle Barcelona for star as defender bid rejected

Mikel Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to sign Lille's Jonathan David

Arsenal's frustrating 1-1 draw at Fulham might tempt Mikel Arteta into the January transfer after failing to reduce the gap to league leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners scored a late goal through Bukayo Saka before the strike was ruled out agonisingly by VAR in the dying minutes of the game.

William Saliba had cancelled out Raul Jimenez's opener but Arteta's men could not find the breakthrough to give them all three points at Craven Cottage and are now six points behind the Reds, who have a game in hand.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Mirror Football has taken a look at the latest Arsenal news as the club ponder making signings that could boost their title hopes.

Arsenal rival Barcelona for David

Lille forward Jonathan David is one of the most in-demand forwards in Europe at the moment after continuing his impressive goal record this season.

The Canadian international has 17 goals from 23 appearances this season and has scored 101 for the French side since joining them in 2020. That electric form in front of goal has reportedly turned heads at Arsenal, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

Arsenal are in desperate need of more firepower to help them towards winning a first Premier League title since 2003-04. Their top scorers are Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz with five each but they lack an out-and-out goalscorer that can take them to the next level.

However, if they want David they'll face stern competition from Barcelona - who have added the player to their shortlist and are more keen on him than Sporting Lisbon hitman Viktor Gyokeres.

The report also claims Arsenal and Barcelona are joined by Bayern Munich, Manchester United and PSG monitoring the forward.

Arsenal want Joao Pedro

Another attacker Arteta's side are reportedly looking at is Brighton's Joao Pedro and the Gunners are willing to put their money where their mouth is, according to reports.

Spanish website Fichajes has claimed that Arsenal are happy to stump up as much as £54m to prize Pedro away from the Amex to bolster their attacking options.

It adds that Arsenal will be rivalled by Arne Slot's Liverpool - who have a "strong interest" in the Brazilian international, despite already boasting a number of top forwards such as Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.

Pedro had a very strong season with the Seagulls last year - netting 20 times from 40 appearances in all competitions but this season he has only managed four strikes from eight games.

One of those goals he scored came against Arsenal this season at the Emirates Stadium, netting the equaliser to frustrate Arteta in a 1-1 draw.

Gunners reject bid for Kiwior

Arsenal have reportedly rebuffed an opening bid of £12.5million from Napoli for defender Jakub Kiwior.

Kiwior has emerged as a target for a number of European clubs ahead of the January transfer window after Mirror Football reported that Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus were all keen on the Polish international and were eyeing up a move.

Now it's been reported by Italian outfit Tuttosport that Napoli have become the first side to test Arsenal's resolve, with their first bid being rejected by the Gunners.

It's claimed Arsenal are looking of a fee more in the region of £20m to be tempted to part ways with the 24-year-old, who has played 50 times since he arrived in 2022. This season he has only started twice in the Premier League.
