Manchester United have been monitoring the performances of Bayern Munich midfielder Konrad Laimer, according to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Red Devils bolstered their midfield with the signing of Manuel Ugarte last summer, but they could enter the transfer market to reinforce the department.
Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are no longer in the prime of their playing careers. The experienced duo could be offloaded at the end of the ongoing season.
Plettenberg now reports that United were ‘recently impressed’ with the performances of Laimer, but there has been no contact with his representatives for now.
United are focusing on other transfer targets while Laimer wants to continue at Bayern. He is considered an important player under manager Vincent Kompany.
Laimer speculation could be agent-driven
The Austria international, who has been compared to a prime N’Golo Kante in the past, joined Bayern from RB Leipzig on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.
The 27-year-old had a good debut campaign with 43 appearances. His playing time was equally divided in the central midfield and right-back positions.
With the departure of manager Thomas Tuchel, his playing time has reduced. Laimer has predominantly played in defence since Kompany’s appointment.
He has averaged only 44 minutes per appearance. In our view, the ongoing speculation linking United could be agent-driven for a couple of key reasons.
The ‘bustling‘ midfielder will enter the last two years of his contract next summer. His representative is probably looking to sort out a new long-term deal with a salary hike.
The agent could also be sending a signal to Bayern that the midfielder’s game time has to be more consistent or he could contemplate a future transfer.
As of now, we don’t see the Red Devils making a move for Laimer as he is not eyeing an exit. The scenario could change at the end of the current campaign.
