Jarrod Bowen could have been sent off for West Ham after their 2-1 win against Wolves on Monday, Keith Hackett has warned.

The England international scored the winner at the London Stadium but was caught in a scuffle with Mario Lemina after the game, and was booked for his actions.

Hackett admitted that the caution was appropriate, but he could have been sent off on another day with The FA likely to review the report and footage that follows.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, the ex-PGMOL chief and ex-Premier League shared his view on the clash following the full-time whistle of the win.

“The referee does have the authority after the match and if he sees and believes that a violent act has taken place can issue red cards,” Hackett said.

“What will happen is that the referee will prepare and submit a special incident report.

“The Football Association will review the report which is submitted online and view the video.

“If appropriate they will charge both clubs with failing to control their players.

“Bowen is lucky that his reaction and aggressive throwing of his opponent could easily have been interpreted as a violent act (red card). Two yellows is appropriate for this clash.”

Lopetegui will be thanking his lucky stars that this incident didn’t escalate, with Bowen likely the main reason he is still in a job this morning.

The Hammers can now prepare for the Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Monday 16 December, with another three points needed.
