Rangers and Nottingham Forest are believed to have held transfer interest in the Sunderland man.

He enjoyed a weekend to remember at Sunderland - but he could have been wearing Rangers blue or Nottingham Forest red.

Tommy Watson is the latest young player to emerge as a star at the Stadium of Light. After earning a run in the Championship side following goals at Premier League 2 level, the winger netted a double to secure a 2-1 victory over Stoke City at the weekend.

It is claimed by the Daily Mirror that Watson “was wanted by Nottingham Forest and Rangers last summer.” Whether or not the Light Blues reactivate their interest is unknown but for now, Watson is just enjoying his big moment in the spotlight. Rangers have had injury problems on the flanks with the likes of Rabbi Matondo and Oscar Cortes.

Boss Regis Le Bris said of new star Watson's performance: "It was clear and powerful. He likes playing one versus one. He has muscular qualities. He can play, repeat games and get stronger. He recovers quickly."
