Why Premier League legend wants Leicester City relegated after Jamie Vardy goal

Retired Premier League star Jermain Defoe has joked he wants Leicester City to get relegated this season after Jamie Vardy bagged yet another goal in an outstanding comeback at the weekend.

Vardy took his tally up to six for the season in the league, adding to his three assists, in the Foxes' brilliant draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday in which they scored two late goals to come back from 2-0 down.

The 86th minute goal against the Seagulls means that the 37-year-old is now on an astounding 142 Premier League goals in 321 appearances, sitting 15th in the all-time scoring charts.

That number is just 20 goals behind former Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Portsmouth striker Defoe who sits 10th in the standings.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Defoe joked about how he would like Leicester to get relegated in order to maintain his spot in the top ten all-time Premier League goalscorers.

Replying to Jamie Carragher's question on whether he would, the 42-year-old replied: "Well..."

"I'm hanging on to that top ten," he continued with laughter.

Defoe's rival Vardy has been in stellar form so far this season with his nine goal contributions in 14 league games, somewhat of a surprise considering his more senior years.

The striker, who was the no.9 when the Foxes pulled off one of the greatest sporting achievements of all time and won the Premier League in 2016, only played in England's top tier for the first time in the 2014/15 season. Considering his ripe age, the 142-goal tally he has accumulated is all the more impressive as he looks to help keep Ruud van Nistelrooy's side away from relegation in his tenth season in the world's best league.
