Edwin van der Sar dropped his clear-cut verdict on Ruben Amorim after the Manchester United manager succeeded Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim first arrived at Old Trafford during the November international break after leaving Sporting CP.
The 39-year-old Portuguese inked a deal until June 2027 and took over at United after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s four-match interim managerial spell came to an end.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is now at Leicester City, was installed as interim manager after Erik ten Hag was sacked as United head coach in late October.
Amorim has overseen a mixed start to life at Old Trafford after managing only two wins in his first five matches as United manager.
United’s run of form has taken a turn for the worse after their 2-0 away defeat to Arsenal and 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford last week.

Van der Sar’s verdict on Man Utd boss Amorim
Ruben Amorim faces an uphill task in securing a top-four finish this season after the Red Devils’ lacklustre 2024-25 Premier League campaign so far.
MORE UNITED STORIES
Manchester United have only managed five league wins in 15 matches and the Red Devils are currently languishing in 13th place in the league table.
Amorim’s men are eight points adrift of the top four and face a tough Premier League test this Sunday when they travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Edwin van der Sar was asked for his two cents on Amorim and whether or not he has the character and personality to succeed.
The 54-year-old United legend admitted that he crossed paths with Amorim when the Red Devils boss was at Sporting CP and he had a “nice conversation” with him.
“A lot of things are required at Manchester United,” Van der Sar said.
“I think what Erik achieved with Ajax, the success in Europe, the way that we played, that he could get the tactics right, I was expecting that also at Manchester United.
“With Ruben, I met him four or five years ago. I think we played Sporting Lisbon, and he was the manager at that time.
“I was watching the U19 Youth League game, and he was there also, so I had a nice conversation with him.
“I think he’s an open man, I think his humour is open, his English is good.”

Van der Sar makes Amorim admission
Amorim will be hopeful that United will bounce back from back-to-back Premier League defeats when they face Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Red Devils are 12th in the Europa League table – level on points with 13th-place Viktoria Plzen – and could still reach the knockout rounds of the competition.
Van der Sar admitted that he has not followed Sporting CP “all the time,” but he believes that United have done their proper research around Amorim.
“I’ve not followed Sporting all the time and I’m sure the homework has been done by the scouts, by the technical people of the club, to find a successor and hopefully bring success to the club,” he added.
