Arsenal are reportedly setting their sights on Dan Ashworth to fill the sporting director void left by Edu in November, after being sacked by Manchester United on Saturday.
The Gunners have yet to replace Edu, who unexpectedly left his position in November. A number of names have been connected with the role but reports now suggest Ashworth is very much on the radar after being shown the door by Sir Jim Ratcliffe at United.
Ashworth had only been in his role for five months, having become the club’s first ever sporting director. His dismissal has roundly come as a shock given United paid Newcastle United £3million for him over the summer.
Ashworth, formerly of the Football Association and Brighton & Hove Albion, is said to hold a good relationship with Richard Garlick, who is leading the hunt for Edu’s successor. The pair worked at West Brom at the same time for three years between 2010 and 2013.
The Sun says Ashworth has caught the eye of Arsenal chiefs in light of recent developments. The fact he is a free agent may appeal to the Gunners, in that they would not have to pay a compensation fee to buy him out of an existing contract.
They may face competition from Everton, who are waiting for The Friedkin Group’s takeover to be ratified. The prospective new owners are conducting an audit of the club and are expected to make a number of boardroom changes.
The likes of West Ham chief Tim Steidten, Real Sociedad sporting director Roberto Olabe and former Arsenal hero Tomas Rosicky have all meanwhile been linked with the vacancy left by Edu.
It remains unclear whether the hunt for his replacement will conclude before the January transfer window begins.
