A college student is being taken on as an apprentice by the NHS after being part of the first batch of T-Level students to complete placements at Queen’s and King George Hospitals.

Lauren Winser, from Harold Hill, will now be learning on the job with Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT).

She had a real taste of life on the ward completing her work placement.

“I was able to learn in a real-life setting,” Lauren said.

“What was really good was seeing a woman patient outside who recognised me and said how nice it was to have me looking after her — that made me realise how working in healthcare is very rewarding.”

Lauren studied at Barking and Dagenham College and put theory into practice by working alongside hospital healthcare assistants, nurses and maternity staff carrying out tasks under supervision.

T-Levels combine classroom learning at college and a placement of at least 45 days to give students practice in the workplace.

The hospital trust’s Stevie Attree said: “This is a grassroots development for our future workforce, who are inspired by our mentors to get the experience and skills needed for patient care.”

There are currently 12 students studying T-Level health who now have placements at the two hospitals.

More students are being taken on next year in health, business management and healthcare science.
