Three years on from Newcastle becoming the richest club in world football, the Magpies aren’t where they would have expected to be.
Indeed, Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League as things stand, and the club’s new owners haven’t quite transformed the team in the way many had hoped.
A number of Steve Bruce players still feature in Eddie Howe’s starting XI with the likes of Joelinton and Joe Willock still playing key roles on Tyneside.
Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Ian Wright has been discussing Newcastle’s squad and the lack of transformation at the club since the takeover.
Wright says that this team hasn’t evolved as quickly as people would’ve expected, noting that the likes of Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron still being at the club is a shock.

Ian Wright shocked Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron are still at Newcastle
Wright spoke about Newcastle’s lack of signings and the composition of that right wing spot.
The pundit says nobody would’ve expected Almiron or Murphy to last this long, but, somehow, they’re still features in this Newcastle team.
“You look at where Newcastle are, there are certain players like Murphy and Almiron,” Wright said.
“There’s no way when the new owners came in, how long is it since the new owners have been there? Two years on there are players who are still in and around that would be there. Nobody can tell me Eddie Howe wasn’t expecting more spending and more players.
“There’s no way two years on Newcastle thought this would be where they’d be. I don’t know where they are.
Who have Newcastle tried to sign?
Wright is spot on, Almiron and Murphy probably shouldn’t be playing for a team with ambitions of qualifying regularly for the Champions League.
Newcastle have tried to address these issues down the right wing, but to no avail.
Indeed, Newcastle have targeted a number of players in this position in recent years.
Newcastle made a move for Anthony Elanga on deadline day in the summer transfer window, while Noni Madueke was a Newcastle target throughout the summer.
Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen has been a long-term target for Eddie Howe’s side,
Unfortunately, Profit and Sustainability rules have curtailed Newcastle’s spending in recent times, and that means that Murphy and Almiron remain two of the Magpies’ most viable options down the right side.
This is certainly a position that needs addressing in the near future.
